This morning, after Gavin left for work, I was standing at the kitchen sink looking out the window while eating my bowl of oats. (I know, I know..... it's better to eat sitting down...but I'm still claiming the new mom card! Life is busy right now!) Anyways, as I thought of all that I needed to accomplish today, I saw my neighbor across the street, Mr. James, walking out to pick up his newspaper in his robe. (Keeping in mind, it was still only about 7:00 or so, still dark).
Now, every morning, Mr. James and his wife, Miss Lena are up by about 5 or 5:30. Their kitchen light comes on, and then sometime between then and about 7 a.m., Mr. James walks out and gets the newspaper. I don't always see him, because I'm usually busy doing my own morning routine of feeding the cats, making the bed, preparing breakfast, etc. But as I noticed him this morning, the thought occurred to me: There's just something to say about life's little consistencies.
In recent discussions, Gavin and I both have realized that ever since we've met, our lives have had very little consistency. Partially by choice, but partially not. The year after we met, I was adjusting to a new job and planning our wedding. Then, about 3 months after our wedding, Gavin started training for his principal certification AND we realized God was leading us to move to Lubbock. So then we started planning for the move. After moving, of course, we both started new jobs, in addition to unpacking and settling into our new home, as well as making all kinds of updates and "fix-its" to the house.
About a year after moving, we realized our family of 2 would be expanding to 3. So with the arrival of our precious son, the general dynamics of our family and household have changed. And on top of everything else, Gavin is facing some changes in his workplace. So, I share all of that just to say.... that there's something to say about life's little consistencies, even if it's just watching the kitchen light turn on across the street, and then watching the old man walk out to get the newspaper morning after morning.
Gavin and I both are ready for a little more consistency in our own lives, which we are prayerful about. Until then, we are grateful for and enjoy the little things in life.
